The Vision

Founded in 1935, the Overhead Door Company of Denver™ has been family-owned and operated throughout its history. For the last forty plus years, the Pettyjohn family has taken pride in servicing the Greater Denver area. During that time, we’ve strived to act ethically in everything we do. We treat our employees like family, and many have been with us for decades. This attitude also extends to our community as we are consistently fair and honest with our customers, while providing the best service and installation in the industry. We are proud of the forty plus years that we have been involved in the garage door business and intend to continue serving Colorado and Wyoming with the same commitment and excellence for many years to come.

OUR STORY

Our story begins in 1921, when Overhead Door™ Corporation’s founder, C. G. Johnson, invented the upward-lifting garage door. In 1926, he followed this with the electric garage door opener. For over 100 years, the Overhead Door™ brand has stood for product quality, expertise, and professional service.

It was this reputation that encouraged Chauncey Kerr to start Overhead Door Company of Denver™ in 1935. For the next forty years, under Mr. Kerr’s guidance, the Company evolved into the premier garage door company in Colorado. Overhead Door Company of Denver™ quickly became an industry leader. Mr. Kerr chose to retire in the mid-1970s.

In 1976, Donald Simpson, Perry Johnson, Dudley Pace, and Robert Esterl incorporated Rio Door Company to continue the Overhead Door™ Legacy in northern Colorado. A few months later, the Company’s name was changed back to Overhead Door Company of Denver™. It was important that the legacy and tradition that had begun in 1935 continue and be respected. This group ran the company for a few years before transferring ownership to Robert Hagman in approximately 1980.

In 1983, Robert and Larry Pettyjohn purchased the Company. In the mid-1980s, Larry Pettyjohn chose to return to a business he had owned and operated for twenty years. Robert’s wife, Beth Ann, purchased Larry’s interest in the Company and joined Robert in running the Company; they continue their involvement today. For more than 40 years, the Pettyjohn family has owned and operated the Denver location along with branches in Cheyenne, Fort Collins, and various Colorado mountain towns. Since 2001, other family members have assumed roles in management, door installation, estimating, selling, and accounting. Currently, Rob Pettyjohn runs the Commercial Division of the Company.

Since 2001, other family members have assumed roles from installing doors to management. Currently, Robert and Beth Ann’s sons, Rob and Matt, hold management roles with the company.
